Easy-flow plastic delights designers

With Ultradur® High Speed, (consists of PBT, Polybutylenterephthalat) even miniature components like computer plugs can be produced more cost effectively: a more energy-effi cient process enables one fi fth of the energy to be saved. The easy-fl ow plastic can be reinforced with much higher glass fi ber content than before.

The "Myto" cantilever chair is made entirely from an innovative polyurethane plastic

It provides completely new freedom of design. That is because nanotechnology makes it fl ow twice as far when heated in the moulding process. This makes it costeffective material.

We are always on the lookout for new ways to turn creative designs into real products. It was therefore logical that the Italian lamp manufacturer Gloria Srl, Lallio, should decide to use Baydur® 60 for the production of its «Ellipsis» table lamp, which was created by the famous designer Bernard Brousse.

This work of art measures 48 x 30 x 15 cm and takes the form of an ellipsoid, at the centre of which is a large cavity. In order to realize this design in a one shot process, moulding in the electrical components, the manufacturer needed this cost effective material.

It combines large wall thicknesses with low weight and the possibility to incorporate extreme undercuts and openings.

Using electrical energy smartly

Electrical consumption

LCompact fluorescent light bulbs are far more effi cient than conventional bulbs. While the latter produce primarily heat (!), compact energy saving bulbs have far more illuminating power per consumed watt. For the same amount of light as a conventional light bulb, they save up to 70% energy and in addition, they last between 10 and 15 times longer and can be fully recycled. Again, chemistry is behind this innovation.

A new generation of light sources

In a nearby future, your fl at screens for TV and computer will be probably be made of OLEDs, these are tiny organic light emitting diodes. We know the classical LED's as indicators in electronic applications, in pocket lamps, house and garden lighting and recently also in car front and tail lamps. They consist of semiconductors and special metals. No need for those anymore in the future generation: OLEDs contain thin plastic fi lms. They are very power-effi cient light emitters, thin and light.

Flat screens equipped with OLEDs need no extra lighting source and thus save lots of energy. For mobile devices, the lower energy consumption of OLEDs results in less need to charge the battery (lower consumption of electricity), longer battery life, and smaller batteries that require less material to produce. OLEDs are best suited to applications where thinness, high contrast and/or low power consumption are desired.

In LCD enhancements, DuPont offers technologies to improve display performance in challenging environments with an effi cient use of materials and low power consumption. They increase an out-of-the-box display's contrast ratio by 300 percent without adding additional light bulbs that would require more power.

Tackling global warming goes hand in hand with reducing emissions of all kindsVOC treatment is done by consumption of waste solvents including halogens/chorides combined with steam production. This Sanofi energy production facility proves it:

  • Fighting global warming goes hand in hand with reducing emissions of all kinds.
    > 95% of the emitted VOC treated
  • Suppresion of external treatment of waste sovent.
    > -9.000 tons/year
  • Suppresion of high risk waste sovents transportation.
    > -400 trucks on teh road/year
  • Reduction of natural gas purchasing.
    > 35 GWh/year, meaning - 50%
  • Reduction of acids purchasing.
    > -700 tons / year
  • Reduction of high risk acids trasnportation
    > -35 trucks on the road/year

OrdenadorDigital power factor correction technology is designed to cut energy use of personal computers and help reduce their carbon footprint. Based on digital signal processing (DSP), new chip are expected to boost energy efficiency by aligning incoming power for optimal energy use by computers.

Optimizing efficient use of electrical power by means of digital signla processing would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 24 million tons per year. This is enabled by modern chips designed with the help of chemicals

Household waste water use at chemical plant

Dow uses monucipal household waste water in its Terneuzen facility (Netherlands), which was previously discharged directly to the river Dow received the International.Responsible Care Award for this project

For the use of these 10 million litres of water per day, 65%les energy is required than for desallinating sea water with the same membrane technology. This lowers CO2 emissions by 5000 tons per year. This concept can be leveraged around the world.
